Who knows how humanity came to be?
Was it a gradual evolution or a sudden revolution?
Lacking eye-witnesses, we will never know. And yet we do know that we are human, and not any other kind of being; we do know that our knowing this is something only we know; and we know that our knowing is something we know about in a particularly human way.
We share with all creatures our bones, our body and our breathing.
Yet we share with the angels our spirituality.
And there is a story of God breathing the breath of life into a body created from the earth – an earth to which we return at the end of our mortal lives.
There are also stories of God breathing new life into the spirits of the dead.
And so we find ourselves to be human, male and female, poised on the cusp of animal and angel, body and spirit, mortality and immortality.
.

Marvelous union of what we know and the stories we have heard. Excellent. Let’s pray the ‘stories’ you mention are true. We live in stories after all.
