Ikon

She holds him to the world

A mirror which reflects

.

Our hopes of divinity

in the eyes of a child

.

A shield which displays

the genesis of humankind

.

She holds him to the world

and looks away.

Another poem inspired by this amazing icon by Andrei Rublev

The Draw of Icons

Icons inspire me.

They are like an invitation:

A gentle invitation
To be part of

The intimate
Conversation

That originates
In God.

‘The Icon of the Holy Trinity” – Andrei Rublev

Icons call us to a deeper meditation, and to prayer:

Gaze

Upon God

In meditation

And live.

Icons can be deeply symbolic. For example, in the icon above, there is a deep richness to the symbolism of the place at the table open towards us (we are invited), of the three angels (they represent the Trinity), of the house at top left (a symbol of hospitality – Abraham’s hospitality in the story from Genesis from which this scene comes), of the tree (the tree of life?), and of the rock (the place of sacrifice?).

I have barely scratched the surface of this famous, beautiful icon.

I recommend Henri Nouwen’s short book “Behold the Beauty of the Lord”. It has an ingenious design which means you can fold out the images of the four icons he explores whilst you are reading about them:

The sacred mystery

The three

Become one

Father, Spirit

Son

.

The angels that come

To the chosen one

.

With identical faces

The gifts of their graces

.

Their wings light as air

Now touching in prayer.

The Life of the World

The dark powers

Have invaded

The life

Of the world

Destruction and violence

Stalk every soul

And yet

We may choose

To make room

For good

And amongst

God’s breath

To make

Our spiritual home.

Icon of Peace

How can

We live

In this house

Of love

Surrounded

By a world of fear?

Our true home

Is not here

In the house

Of hatred and fear

To live

In a world of fear

To live

In this world so near

Perfect Love

Fear will assail

The soul

.

Yet perfect love

Will free

.

The world

From its control.
