Inspiring Poetry: “unconscious intercourse with beauty”

.

William Wordsworth is one of the best writers to explore the connectedness of the human soul and the natural world. I see him as a kind of mystic who celebrates the powerful non-rational ways of knowing through sense experience, intuition and unconscious, instinctive response.

These are some beautiful lines from The Prelude, Book 1 – read them slowly and more than once to get the full effect – they are not to be rushed!

.

I held unconscious intercourse with beauty

Old as creation, drinking in a pure

Organic pleasure from the silver wreaths

Of curling mist, or from the level plain

Of waters coloured by impending clouds.
